What you will build

A before-and-after of one app screen, with three specific usability problems named and a redesign that fixes them.

Why this matters

Product teams hire people who can explain why something confuses users. This is the smallest real version of that work.

Learning outcomes

  • Watch a real person use a screen without helping them
  • Name usability problems precisely instead of saying 'it looks bad'
  • Justify each design change with the problem it solves

Step-by-step challenge

  1. 1

    Choose a screen

A ticket booking, exam form, payment or delivery screen you find annoying.

  2. 2

    Watch someone use it

Give them a task. Stay silent. Note where they pause or tap the wrong thing.

  3. 3

    List three problems

Write each as: what happened, why it happened, who it affects.

  4. 4

    Redesign it

Figma, Canva or neat paper sketch — all accepted.

  5. 5

    Annotate your changes

Label each change with the problem number it solves.

Submission requirements

  • Original screenshot and your redesign, side by side
  • Your three problem statements
  • A reflection on what surprised you while watching someone else

Accepted formats: Canva link, PDF, image, document, video link or written reflection.
